As your wine Fellows, it is our duty to love red wine. But not all reds win our hearts and we want to share with you the ones that do.
As you probably know, Portugal is a country of blend wines. There are dozens of red grape varieties used across the country but lately there’s one that has been standing out as one of the best: Touriga Nacional. A vibrant variety of floral aromas (violet and bergamot) along with wild black fruit.
Another variety that stands out is Baga but with a different story. Coming from the wine region of Bairrada, where it is commonly vinified, the Baga variety is a tricky one, only mastered by top winemakers to produce wines balsamic and with red fruits and that present a fantastic evolution capacity which makes it loves by more experienced wine lovers.
Lastly, borrowed from France where it is not commonly known, there’s the Alicante Bouchet variety. It was mainly adopted in the Alentejo region and has already become a Portuguese grape variety, producing powerful, fleshy and impacting wines.
Here’s our selection of the wines that best represent these varieties:

Herdade das Servas Alicante Bouschet
Herdade das Servas Alicante Bouschet
We've considered this wine an excellent representative of the Alicante Bouschet variety. It is a powerful wine, concentrated with ripe black fruit, cocoa and some vegetable, mainly olive. Even though it is full and intense in the mouth, it has a good acidity that keeps it live and gives it extension. It is somewhat rustic and pairs in perfection with complex and strong dishes.

Giz Vinhas Velhas
Giz Vinhas Velhas
The wines produced by Giz - a project by the enologist Luís Gomes - are always in small number, full of character and partially made resorting to artisanal methods. Vinhas Velhas is a wine coming from centennial Baga vines. Ripe red fruit and balsamic (cedar and pine) notes join the sweeter notes of wood. Despite being a structured and complex red, it manages not to be heavy, showing a vivid ending
with persistant final tannins.
